Math Facts- Adding 0-10

Whoohoo! Several first graders completed their math facts 0-10 today. They are bringing home their data record sheets to share the great work they have been doing. These kiddos start subtraction facts tomorrow!

All About Plants!

Room 4 planted beans and grass this week. First, we soaked the bean seeds overnight. Next, we noticed the seed shell popped open and a tiny sprout appeared! Then, we pushed our bean into some rich soil. Last, we added a little water to make them grow. In 10-14 days we hope we have baby plants!

Reading For Fluency: First Grade Ice Cream Challenge

Every year first grade teachers challenge their students to read 10 minutes each day. As an incentive we offer an ice cream party for each child that returns 20 ice cream scoops (10 minutes each, signed by a parent). The idea is to read every day... fill out the scoop and return it each day. At school your child will cut the scoop out and glue it onto our ice cream bulletin board in the hall outside room 4. REMEMBER- 20 Scoops = free ice cream!
BEGIN Monday May 2nd
END Tuesday May 31st
Ice Cream Social TBA
(We usually try for the first Friday following the challenge)
Happy Reading!!!

Ridgeview Jog-A-Thon

Our annual Jog-A-Thon preparations have begun! Mr. Crist kicked off the challenge Friday April 22nd. First graders  attended an all school assembly where we heard all about the run, prizes for students and classrooms who bring in the most donations, AND even some gifts for kids who get entered into a drawing JUST because they returned their envelope with pledge money, as promised. We are looking forward to this fun day, THURSDAY MAY 19th!

White Boards

Room 4 has a xerox budget each year. My copy count was nearly gone before spring break. I am not able to print off the little stories I added to the homework folders. I am using white boards and pens in reading groups instead. Please know your readers are doing their skill work, just not bringing papers home to show you!

Recess Games

Room 4 has listed the games they have created this year! Many games played at recess are imaginary, age appropriate play. As we talked this week many discussions centered on ok/not ok, and why we might like to change some of the pretend choices. I am so proud of all of my first graders. The games based on video games, though creative, energetic, and fun for some, are too "scary", for others. The games that  have weapons, blood, monsters, are too graphic for some 6 year olds to enjoy. Our recess staff enforces the school rule "no tag/no chase" when "running" gets out of hand. First graders are able to discern the difference. Please enjoy their art work, every child contributed their favorite game and added to our discussion. I have a smart group of kids!

Math Graphing

Room 4 has spent the year graphing our weather. As we near the end of our data collection, we are writing a book all about water. Our big question this year, "Why is rainfall important?" has given first graders a lot to think about! This week we read, created, and answered questions about data from our graphs.

"If You Give A Pig A Pancake..."

Room 4 enjoyed reading "circle stories" by Laura Numeroff. The author writes stories that start and finish in the same place. After a week of reading and writing, we celebrated by eating our own pancakes and syrup! YUM!
