Math Facts Practice

One of our daily routines includes practicing addition facts.  Every student has a math envelope.  It has a pocket for their (25 problem) quiz, and a graph on the front for recording their progress. These are not timed. Every child works on the level they are ready for. In our class right now first graders are adding from 0 to 5. As a child reaches 100% on a level, they receive the next level to begin memorizing. I give their quiz in small groups so I can monitor and notice who must count on his/her fingers, or can do the math in their heads. I encourage noticing "patterns" as they add. We are in unit 3 - addition and subtraction. As students move through the addition facts, 0-10, they will graduate to  subtraction facts 0-10.

Thank You!

Thank you room 4 parents! Our class had 21 of 22 parents attend a conference over the last two weeks. You are awesome! I have one more conference to reach 100% participation. Room 4 will celebrate when we reach our 100% goal. This week our schedule is as follows;
Tuesday              11-29     Reading Log home
Wednesday        11-30     Report Card Day   no students
Thursday            12-1       Conference Day    no students
Friday                 12-2       Conference Day    no students
Thank you! You have attended, and may enjoy the time with your family, and concentrate on your other child's conferences without rushing between classrooms. I have taken personal days Thursday and Friday to travel to my son's wedding.

Turkeys Are Thankful For...

So many reasons to give thanks! Please enjoy your turkeys this Thanksgiving!

Making Cornbread

Cornbread with butter! Mmm! We loved the scent of baking cornbread in room 4 today. We waited patiently for each batch to bake, shaking our heavy whipping cream(with a marble inside) side-to-side until it "clumped" -- our marble was no longer rolling! We poured off the milk and yum!

Churning Butter

Room 4 "churned" butter today! What great fun. Everyone enjoyed our yummy results!

Making Candles

Today first graders dipped candles like children did long ago. Children had daily chores that helped their families thrive in the new land. Pilgrim children gathered wood and carried water to the house daily for cooking, bathing, and laundry. They fed the farm animals twice a day. Girls helped their mothers prepare meals, sweep and clean heir homes, and tend to the gardens. Boys chopped and stacked wood, help make repairs to their cabins, dug post holes and built fences. In addition to their daily chores, there were "provisions" that had to made and stored for later. Candle making was one of those chores. It was a hot, time consuming job. First graders learned first hand how long it takes for hot wax to build up on a wick! A few touched the hot wax as they dipped. We were lucky to have mother helpers melt the wax for us, no standing next to a hot fire on a hot summer day! Thank you Mrs. Marchant and Mrs. Proden! We appreciate you both.

Owls, Owls, Owls!

Room 4 finished our owls this week. We learned lots of facts, watched a pair of Great Horned Owl feed on a live

webcam, and read about the different kinds of owls.

Free Books!

Today first graders who returned their 6th Reading Log got to choose a free book! This was a book that has been gently used, or new! I have quite a few students who may get their book next week! Keep those Reading Logs coming in. Great job room 4 readers!
