Tooth Fairy Visit!

February is National Dental Health month. The"Tooth Fairy" visited all first grade classrooms today to share the importance of caring for our teeth. We know they will last us our entire lives! The focus was on brushing and making good, healthy food choices.

Cycles! Our Cycles Continue!

Room 4 has completed the "Life Cycle" of a fly, and today we also learned about "Recycling". Our class learned how to reduce, reuse, and recycle to limit the amount of garbage that goes into the landfill. We "reused" paper bags today to make a puppet! AMAZING artists in room 4!!!

Lion's Club Flags for First Graders!

Our local Lion's Club members Linda Chin and Ross Isabel visited room 4 today. They shared important information about our flag. We heard that the red stripes show courage, the white stripes stand for liberty and the blue "union" square stands for loyalty. We each got our very own American flag!

What is a Cycle?

Room 4 has been reading and writing informational texts. As we continue to study animals and weather, we have stumbled onto a very "big idea".  Every animal has a "life cycle". Each type of weather we read about has a place in the "water cycle".  This week we will continue to learn about "cycles",  and how cycles are found everywhere. We brainstormed our ideas;

Valentine Fun!

Ridgeview Read-A-Thon!

Room 4 first graders have started the Ridgeview Read-A-Thon with great enthusiasm! Last week our class had 14/25 kiddos participate in the nightly reading for class points. Mrs. Babcock set 7,000 minutes as our class goal to reach the "movie and popcorn" reward. Our PTO volunteers have put in hours setting up this project to get as many kids as possible reading in the month of February. In addition, our library gives weekly prizes to kids who turn in slips. Their name is entered in a drawing, we had 6 winners last week! Please continue to support your child by signing the green reading slips and returning them each morning. There is NO LIMIT on the amount of MINUTES your child may read! Today, sadly, we are in last place with 1,200 minutes. Help our Zebra trot down the hall!

Goal Setting

First graders are learning how to set goals. Our first attempt was math fluency. Monday morning we decided to notice where we are, ie 1's plus, 3's plus, and "predict" where we would be on Friday. Most first graders over predicted  where they could move to by Friday. A great lesson in thinking about what you want/or can accomplish in a short amount of time. We will celebrate when we make our goals!

Smokey the Bear!

What a great day! Smokey the Bear and the U.S. Forest Service visited first grade today. We learned all the ways fires can start. NINE out of TEN fires are made from human mistakes. Only 1 fire in 10 is from lightning, or natural causes! We watched a video explaining who lives in the forest, and how "Junior Forest Rangers" can keep our forests "fire free". Please ask your first grader what they learned. Five Simple Rules of Fire Safety-
1. Only you can prevent forest fires!
2. Always be careful with fire.
3. Never play with matches or lighters.
4. Always watch your campfire.
5. Make sure your fire is completely out before you leave it.

Room 4 Helper!

Room 4 has a wonderful volunteer! Lydia visits room 4 every afternoon to help first graders. She is in Mrs. McCornack's 4th grade. She is coming on her lunch recess to help us! What a wonderful, generous gift to room 4.
