Happy 2017!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! A few students were able to come out to school and pick up their gift and projects! Kiddos who were not, will have theirs waiting for them January 3rd! PLEASE find your bright yellow homework folders and bring them in on Tuesday! I need to refill them and send them home again, the same day.

Today room 4 welcomed Mrs. Linda Seitz as a guest reader! She works for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Each year their employees give a day of service to our community.  Room 4 got to rock in a cozy corner and listen to Christmas stories. Thank you Mrs. Seitz and Caribbean Cruise Lines!

Math Facts Practice

One of our daily routines includes practicing addition facts.  Every student has a math envelope.  It has a pocket for their (25 problem) quiz, and a graph on the front for recording their progress. These are not timed. Every child works on the level they are ready for. In our class right now first graders are adding from 0 to 5. As a child reaches 100% on a level, they receive the next level to begin memorizing. I give their quiz in small groups so I can monitor and notice who must count on his/her fingers, or can do the math in their heads. I encourage noticing "patterns" as they add. We are in unit 3 - addition and subtraction. As students move through the addition facts, 0-10, they will graduate to  subtraction facts 0-10.
